How to use this Avios calculator

The page has two calculators. Mode 1 converts any Avios balance into a dollar value using Award Travel Finder's published cents-per-point valuation (1.5¢ per Avios). Mode 2 lets you pick a destination from London and a cabin — and shows the exact off-peak and peak Avios cost for that route, pulled from BA's reward chart. Both update live; there's nothing to submit.

What is an Avios worth?

Avios are the shared loyalty currency of the British Airways Club (formerly Executive Club), Iberia Club, Aer Lingus AerClub, Qatar Airways Privilege Club, Vueling Club and Finnair Plus. One Avios is worth roughly 1.5¢ on average. You'll get well below that on poor redemptions (BA Holidays packages, the shopping portal, upgrades on cash tickets — all roughly 0.5¢) and well above on good ones (off-peak Club World, partner-airline business class on Qatar Qsuite — 1.5–2.0¢+).

How many Avios from London to New York (and other top routes)?

From London to New York on British Airways (per BA's current reward chart):

  • Economy: 27,500 Avios off-peak / 33,000 Avios peak (plus taxes)
  • Premium Economy: 46,750 Avios off-peak / 66,000 Avios peak (plus taxes)
  • Club World (Business): 88,000 Avios off-peak / 99,000 Avios peak (plus taxes)
  • First: 75,000 Avios off-peak / 88,000 Avios peak (plus taxes)

Use the route lookup above for any other destination — we have published Avios pricing for 55+ destinations from London including Amsterdam, Paris, Barcelona, Dublin, Cape Town, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Sydney, Dubai, Bangkok and Buenos Aires.

BA Avios sweet spots

Three Avios redemptions consistently deliver outsized value:

  • Off-peak Club World to North America: long-haul business class consistently delivers 1.4–2¢+ per Avios vs cash fares regularly above $4,000. See the route lookup above for current pricing.
  • Aer Lingus from Dublin to the US: Avios prices these short-haul Aer Lingus transatlantic flights at the same level as Dublin–US routes — about 13,000–25,000 Avios one-way in economy. Position to Dublin and you've cut transatlantic costs roughly in half.
  • Qatar Qsuite using Avios: Book Qatar's award-winning business class through ba.com using Avios. You're paying BA Avios prices for what's widely regarded as the best business class product in the world.

Avios poor-value redemptions to avoid

  • BA Holidays package bookings typically clock in at 0.5–0.6¢ per Avios.
  • Upgrades with Avios on cash tickets usually cost more Avios than booking the higher cabin outright.
  • The BA shopping portal is the worst redemption in the program — roughly 0.5¢ per Avios.

How to earn Avios faster

The fastest way to build an Avios balance is transferring from a credit-card transferable currency:

  • Amex Membership Rewards → British Airways Club: 1:1, instant. Periodic 25–40% transfer bonuses.
  • Chase Ultimate Rewards → British Airways Club: 1:1, instant.
  • Capital One miles → BA Club: 1:1.
  • Bilt Rewards → BA Club: 1:1, occasional 100% transfer bonuses.
  • Marriott Bonvoy → BA Club: 3:1 with a 5,000-Avios bonus per 60,000 transferred.

Earning natively on the British Airways American Express cards is also competitive, especially when you trigger the BA companion voucher (formerly the 2-4-1 voucher) — see our Avios companion voucher guide.

Frequently asked questions

How much is 1 Avios worth in dollars?

Roughly 1.5¢ on average. You'll get noticeably less on shopping or upgrade redemptions and 1.5–2¢+ on long-haul premium-cabin flights, especially off-peak.

How many Avios do I need for a flight from London to New York?

Use the route lookup above for exact pricing across all four cabins. Off-peak Club World is one of the standout sweet spots, and First Class to New York during off-peak windows is consistently one of the highest cents-per-Avios redemptions in the program.

What's the difference between off-peak and peak Avios pricing?

British Airways publishes an off-peak and peak date calendar each year. Off-peak dates cost 15–35% fewer Avios for the same seat. As a general rule, January, February, March and parts of October/November are off-peak; school holidays and summer are peak.

Can I use Avios on partner airlines?

Yes. Avios can be redeemed on American Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Qatar Airways, Japan Airlines, Iberia, Aer Lingus, Finnair, Malaysia Airlines, Royal Jordanian, Qantas, Alaska Airlines and others — most are bookable on ba.com. Some partners (notably American) require phone bookings.

Do Avios expire?

Avios in the British Airways Club expire after 36 months of account inactivity. Any earning or redemption activity resets the clock. Inside the Iberia and Qatar programs, expiration policies differ — keep one account active to preserve them all.

Why are BA award taxes so high?

British Airways adds substantial fuel surcharges to long-haul award bookings — often $400–700 in business class out of London. The math still works for premium cabins because you're saving thousands in cash, but it's worth factoring in with the Cash vs Points (Flights) calculator.
