What Are Flying Blue Promo Rewards?

Promo Rewards are monthly discounted award flights — typically 25-50% cheaper than Classic rates.

On the 1st of each month, Flying Blue publishes a list of routes with discounted Miles pricing valid for travel 1-6 months out. These are marketed as Promo Rewards (previously "Promo Awards") and they sit alongside the standard Classic pricing shown on airfrance.com and klm.com.

Promo availability is limited. Popular routes — particularly transatlantic business class — often sell out within the first week of the month. Economy Promos tend to be more widely available. Promos apply on both Air France / KLM metal and most SkyTeam partner airlines.

The practical effect: a New York → Paris business class seat that lists at 70,000-90,000 Miles in Classic can drop to 45,000-60,000 during a Promo month. Combined with low European taxes (unlike British Airways) and Flying Blue's free stopover rule, it's one of the cheapest ways to fly business class between the US and Europe.

Best Flying Blue Promo Examples

Representative redemptions that show up in most Promo months.

JFK → CDG business class, 50,000 Miles

5-9 cpp

During a typical Promo month, business class from New York to Paris drops to ~50,000 Miles one-way. Classic pricing is 70,000-90,000. Cash fares for these seats are usually $2,500-$4,500, so Miles-per-dollar value lands at 5-9 cents per Mile.

BOS → AMS economy, 20,000 Miles

2-4 cpp

Transatlantic economy at Eurostar prices. Perfect use for smaller balances, and the taxes/fees are modest compared to booking BA Avios through London.

CDG → JNB business class, 60,000 Miles

4-7 cpp

Paris to Johannesburg in Air France business for ~60K Miles during promos. Comparable SkyTeam pricing through Delta or Virgin Atlantic is materially higher.

AMS → BKK business class, 62,500 Miles

5-8 cpp

KLM business class Amsterdam to Bangkok is one of the most reliable long-haul promo routes. The stopover rule lets you add a second destination for no extra Miles.

How to Transfer Points to Flying Blue

Flying Blue is one of the most widely supported transfer partners. Transfers are instant — never speculatively transfer, always confirm promo availability first.

Card Program Ratio Notes
Amex Membership Rewards 1:1 Most common source. Watch for occasional 25-30% transfer bonuses to Flying Blue.
Chase Ultimate Rewards 1:1 Instant transfers. One of the few ways to get Flying Blue Miles from Chase points.
Bilt Rewards 1:1 Earn Bilt on rent payments, transfer to Flying Blue on Rent Day for a 100%+ kicker.
Citi ThankYou Points 1:1 Flying Blue is one of Citi's more useful transfer partners for Europe.
Capital One Miles 1:1 Direct 1:1 transfer. Good default for Capital One cardholders.
Wells Fargo Rewards 1:1 Flying Blue is one of the few airline partners Wells Fargo supports directly.
Marriott Bonvoy 3:1 Poor ratio. Avoid unless you have orphan Marriott points to burn.
Tip: Amex runs 20-40% transfer bonuses to Flying Blue 2-3 times per year. Stacking a 30% bonus on top of a 40% Promo drops a typical 60K Classic seat to ~32K Amex points out of pocket.

Tips for Booking Flying Blue Promos

A few quirks that turn a good Promo redemption into a great one.

1

Free stopovers on one-way awards

Flying Blue allows a free stopover on one-way awards, including on partner airlines. Fly CDG → JFK with a 5-day stop in Amsterdam for the same Miles as the direct one-way. No other major program offers this.

2

Promos refresh on the first of the month

New Promo Rewards routes are published on the 1st of each month and last until the end of the month. Popular routes disappear within days — check on release day, not the 28th.

3

Transfer from Amex, then search

Flying Blue transfers are instant. Never pre-transfer speculatively. Find promo availability first on airfrance.com or klm.com, then transfer the exact Miles you need.

4

Watch for transfer bonuses

Amex runs 20-40% transfer bonuses to Flying Blue 2-3 times per year. Stacking a 30% transfer bonus with a 40% Promo discount turns a 60K Classic seat into a 32K out-of-pocket cost — roughly half the published Miles.

5

Partner airlines count

Promo Rewards apply on SkyTeam partners too — Delta, Korean Air, Kenya Airways, Virgin Atlantic, ITA and more. Some of the best value comes from booking partner metal at Flying Blue's promo rates.

6

Low taxes out of Europe

Unlike British Airways, Flying Blue rarely passes through heavy fuel surcharges. Total taxes on a transatlantic Promo award are usually $150-$300, making the cash-value math dramatically better.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are Flying Blue Promo Rewards?
Flying Blue Promo Rewards (sometimes called 'Promo Awards') are monthly discounted award flights from Air France and KLM. Each month, the program publishes a list of routes where Miles are 25-50% cheaper than the standard Classic award rate. The promo rate is the lowest published price — Classic pricing kicks in once promo inventory is exhausted or on non-promo dates.
When are Promo Rewards released?
New Promo Rewards are announced on the 1st of each month and are valid until the end of that month. Travel dates are typically 1-6 months out. Popular routes — especially business class to the US, Asia and the Caribbean — often sell out within the first week, so check airfrance.com or klm.com on release day for the widest availability.
How much cheaper are Promo Rewards than Classic rewards?
Discounts range from roughly 25% to 50% off the Classic rate. A typical transatlantic business class seat that prices at 70,000-90,000 Miles in Classic usually drops to 45,000-60,000 during a Promo month. Economy discounts are usually 25-33%; business class often sees the biggest percentage drops.
Which credit cards transfer to Flying Blue?
Amex Membership Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards, Bilt Rewards, Citi ThankYou Points, Capital One Miles and Wells Fargo Rewards all transfer to Flying Blue at 1:1. Marriott Bonvoy also transfers at 3:1 but the ratio is poor. Amex is the most common source and regularly runs 20-40% transfer bonuses to Flying Blue.
Can I book Promo Rewards on partner airlines?
Yes. Promo pricing applies to Air France and KLM metal plus most SkyTeam partners bookable through Flying Blue — including Delta, Virgin Atlantic, Korean Air, Kenya Airways and ITA Airways. Partner promo availability tends to be narrower, but is often better value than booking the same flights through the partner's own program.
Are there fuel surcharges on Flying Blue Promo Rewards?
Yes, but they are moderate. Total taxes and fees on a transatlantic business class Promo award are typically $150-$300, compared with $500-$800+ on equivalent British Airways awards. Flights departing France (CDG) carry slightly higher taxes than departing the Netherlands (AMS) due to French aviation tax.
Can I stopover on a Flying Blue Promo award?
Yes. Flying Blue allows one free stopover on a one-way award ticket, including at CDG or AMS when routing through Europe. This rule applies to Promo Rewards too — effectively turning a one-way award into a multi-destination trip for the same Miles.
Can I hold a Promo award before transferring Miles?
Flying Blue does not offer a free hold on award bookings. You must have Miles in your Flying Blue account to confirm the seat. Luckily, transfers from Amex, Chase, Bilt, Citi and Capital One are instant (usually under a minute), so find the availability first, then transfer the exact Miles needed.
Is it worth topping up with cash-and-miles?
Flying Blue lets you pay part-Miles-part-cash, but the cash portion is usually valued at ~1 cent per Mile — a poor rate. If you are short, it is almost always better to transfer Miles from Amex, Chase, Bilt or Capital One at 1:1 rather than buying the shortfall in cash.
How does Flying Blue pricing compare to other SkyTeam programs?
For flights on Air France, KLM and Delta, Flying Blue Promo Rewards are almost always the cheapest SkyTeam option — beating Delta SkyMiles, Virgin Atlantic Flying Club and Korean Air SKYPASS for transatlantic business class. Virgin Atlantic is the exception: it is the cheapest way to book ANA (a cross-alliance sweet spot) but more expensive than Flying Blue for SkyTeam metal.
