Many transferable currencies have no direct partner with a given airline. A hotel program — usually Marriott Bonvoy — bridges the gap. A few examples:

Amex Membership Rewards → American Airlines AAdvantage

No direct Amex→AA transfer — go via Marriott Bonvoy.
Chase Ultimate Rewards → Alaska Mileage Plan

Chase can't reach Alaska directly; Marriott Bonvoy can.
Amex Membership Rewards → United MileagePlus

Amex has no United partner — hop through Marriott.
Chase Ultimate Rewards → Delta SkyMiles

Chase → Marriott → Delta when there's no direct route.
