Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is the miles calculator?
The calculator shows published award chart rates (off-peak/saver level) for each program. Actual costs may vary based on date, availability, and whether the airline uses dynamic pricing. Use our live search to check real-time availability and exact costs.
Why do different programs charge different amounts for the same route?
Each loyalty program has its own award chart based on distance bands, zones, or dynamic pricing. Some programs offer significantly cheaper redemptions for certain routes. For example, ANA Mileage Club is often the cheapest for business class to Japan, while British Airways Avios is great for short-haul flights.
What are transfer partners and why do they matter?
Transfer partners are credit card programs (like Amex, Chase, Capital One) that let you transfer points to airline loyalty programs. If a program shows 'Amex MR' as a transfer partner, you can convert your Amex Membership Rewards points to that airline's miles, often at a 1:1 ratio.
Which loyalty program is the best value?
It depends on the route and cabin class. For transatlantic business class, Virgin Atlantic and ANA often offer the best value. For short-haul flights, British Airways Avios is hard to beat. Use this calculator to compare for your specific route.
Are taxes and fees included in the points shown?
No, the points shown are the miles/points cost only. You'll also need to pay taxes and fees in cash when booking. These vary by airline: some airlines (like Virgin Atlantic) have low surcharges, while others (like British Airways) can have significant fuel surcharges on their own flights.
Can I search for actual award availability?
Yes! After comparing points costs, click 'Search Availability' next to any program to check real-time award seat availability on Award Travel Finder. We search 18 airlines simultaneously.
